The Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) has once again demonstrated its commitment to excellence, innovation, and global relevance under the visionary leadership of Vice Chancellor, Professor Dimie Ogoina. On April 15, 2025, the University took a significant step in actualizing its strategic goals by launching a transformative digital initiative that positions BMU at the forefront of medical education and research in Nigeria and beyond.
At his inauguration, Professor Ogoina outlined a bold agenda centered on digital health, biomedical research, infectious disease response, smart infrastructure, and a 1000-seater conference centre. The deployment of cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) technology—Meta Quest 3S—demonstrates the Vice Chancellor’s unwavering commitment to these priorities. This next-generation headset brings advanced immersive capabilities to BMU’s teaching and clinical training, reinforcing the institution’s strategic vision.
During a 2-Day Training Workshop organized to introduce the new VR tools, Professor Tarilah Tebepah, Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Council, praised the initiative as a turning point for experiential learning in Nigerian universities. The Meta Quest 3S offers high-resolution visuals, spatial audio, interactive 3D environments, and AI-integrated mixed reality—providing students with realistic clinical simulations that significantly enhance learning outcomes.
Supported by OJ Engineering, the workshop aims to empower faculty and students with the competencies needed to leverage this innovation in both academic and research settings. The initiative is set to revolutionize clinical education by facilitating hands-on training in diagnostics, procedures, and decision-making within a safe, controlled, and engaging digital environment.
This milestone highlights BMU’s evolution into a technologically driven academic institution, with a clear trajectory towards excellence and impact. Under the dynamic leadership of Professor Dimie Ogoina, the university is charting a new course in biomedical innovation, setting a benchmark for 21st century education in Africa.

Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) is thrilled to announce that it has obtained official approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to introduce the full-time mode of the B.Sc. Dental Therapy programme. This significant achievement follows a meticulous resource verification exercise conducted by the NUC.
During the verification process, the B.Sc. Dental Therapy programme was inadvertently omitted from the list of the newly approved undergraduate academic programmes for the 2023/2024 academic session. BMU promptly brought this omission to the attention of the NUC for rectification.
In a proactive response, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission has assumed responsibility for the omission and has diligently overseen the necessary updates to incorporate the B.Sc. Dental Therapy programme into BMU's academic offerings in full-time mode This approval also extends to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), both of which will be duly informed of this new addition to our academic programmes.
BMU is now proud to offer full-time mode of study in the following 25 academic programmes:
Candidates eager to seek admission into any of these 25 academic programmes for the 2023/2024 Academic Session, and who have participated in the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) administered by JAMB, securing a score of not less than 140, are eligible to apply.
For more information about these programmes and the admission process, please visit our official website at www.bmu.edu.ng.
Bayelsa Medical University remains dedicated to providing quality education, and this approval reaffirms our commitment to offering a comprehensive range of academic programmes to nurture the next generation of healthcare professionals.

For Vice Chancellor
Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing hands-on and comprehensive education for its students. In line with this commitment, the 200 Level B.Sc. Community Health Science students recently embarked on a two-part clinical posting journey that allowed them to immerse themselves in practical learning and patient care.
The first phase of the posting took place at the Primary Health Center Akaba from July 24, 2023, to August 4th, 2023. During this period, the students engaged in a range of activities, including suturing, incisions and drainage, infusion setups, as well as conducting home rounds and visits to patients.
Continuing their dedication to learning, the students then moved to the prestigious Federal Medical Center Yenagoa (FMC) for the second phase of their clinical posting. This phase spanned from August 7th, 2023, to August 19th, 2023. Here, they were exposed to a diverse range of medical cases and scenarios, further enhancing their clinical skills and patient interaction abilities.
Under the expert guidance of the Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Doris Dotimi, and the programme coordinators, Mr. Macaulay Tinimoye and Mr. Godbless Richman, the students navigated their clinical experiences with diligence and professionalism. Additionally, they were fortunate to be mentored by the experienced preceptor, Mrs. Jerry Berezi, and Dr. Mrs. Dolfina Ikemike, both of whom played a crucial role in shaping the students' practical knowledge and understanding.
Throughout their clinical postings, the students demonstrated exceptional commitment and enthusiasm, praising their supervisors and mentors for their proactive approach to learning. They not only honed their procedural skills but also developed a deeper understanding of patient care, teamwork, and the challenges of providing healthcare in diverse environments.
The Department of Community Health Science applauds these students for their remarkable achievements during their first clinical postings. Their dedication to advancing their skills and their commitment to compassionate patient care exemplify the values upheld by our institution.

Bayelsa Medical University is taking a significant stride towards enhancing the practical education of its nursing students by initiating a strategic partnership with FMC. As part of this collaboration, the nursing students will participate in weekly practical sessions at the Federal Hospital every Wednesday for the next 15 weeks, starting from Wednesday, 16th August, 2023.
Under the guidance of Dr. Mrs. Timighe, Head of Department for Nursing Science, the students will have the unique opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge in a real-world clinical setting.
The collaboration with FMC represents a pivotal step in BMU’s commitment to offering holistic medical education. By working alongside experienced medical professionals, these students will gain insights that can't be replicated in a classroom setting, empowering them to excel in their future nursing careers.
Prof. Ebitimitula Nicholas Etebu, Vice-Chancellor of Bayelsa Medical University, expressed enthusiasm for this initiative, stating, "Our nursing students have acquired a strong foundation of theoretical knowledge, and now it is time for them to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Clinical exposure is the bedrock of their future professional careers. This step is pivotal in cultivating professionalism within their chosen field and will profoundly influence their practice as nurses throughout their careers."
The 200-level nursing students are exuding excitement about this opportunity to dive into real healthcare practice. The chance to interact with patients, administer treatments, and collaborate with healthcare teams is seen as a pivotal moment in their academic journey. The trainings’ 15-week duration will provide the students with ample time to observe, learn, and actively contribute to the medical environment.
Bayelsa Medical University remains committed to providing its students with exceptional education and experiential learning opportunities. This partnership with FMC represents a significant step towards producing well-prepared nursing professionals who can make a positive impact on the healthcare landscape.
