BAYELSA MEDICAL UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL MICRO-ORGANISM DAY (IMD) – SEPTEMBER 17TH, 2025.
The Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) proudly joined the global community in commemorating World International Microorganism Day (IMD) on Wednesday, September 17th, 2025. The day, established to raise awareness about the critical role of microorganisms in health, medicine, industry, and the environment, highlights their dual nature as both beneficial allies and potential adversaries in human life.
As part of the celebration, the Department of Microbiology, led by the distinguished Dr. (Mrs.) Chidinma Dakore-Olukole, Director of Academic Planning and Innovation(DAPRI), paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dimie Ogoina, to present the activities lined up for this year’s event. Both staff and students of the Department participated in the visit.
Welcoming the delegation, the Vice-Chancellor applauded the initiative of Dr. Dakore and the Department for taking the lead in marking this important global event. He emphasized the significance of microorganisms, recalling his inaugural lecture where he described them as “disease associates, adversaries, and allies.” He noted that while some microorganisms cause illness, many others are indispensable in producing antibiotics, advancing biotechnology, and supporting human health. According to him, “it is important to identify microorganisms as allies and leverage their benefits, while devising strategies to mitigate their adversarial effects”.
BMU’s commitment to advancing scientific knowledge, encouraging innovation, and fostering awareness of the invisible yet powerful world of microorganisms is encouraging.
