BMU SHINES ON THE GLOBAL STAGE AS THREE OF ITS RESEARCHERS RANKED AMONG WORLD’S TOP 2% - PLUS UNIVERSITY GAINS RECOGNITION IN TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION RANKINGS.

The Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) has achieved remarkable milestones on the global academic and research landscape, underscoring its rapid rise as one of Nigeria’s most promising centers of medical and scientific excellence.

In October 2025, three of BMU’s scholars were named among the World’s Top 2% Scientists by TOPSCINET, a globally respected ranking platform that identifies leading researchers based on citation impact and scholarly influence.

The honoured scholars are:

  • Ranked No. 36 was Prof. Dimie Ogoina (NDU/BMU), Infectious Diseases Physician, Internal Medicine Researcher, and Global Health Leader.
  • Ranked No. 229 was Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei (BMU), Analytical and Environmental Chemistry
  • Ranked No. 138 was Dr. Izah Sylvester Chibueze (BMU), Environmental Biology and Toxicology.

This global recognition highlights BMU’s growing strength in scientific research and its contribution to medical knowledge at both national and international levels. The inclusion of BMU scholars among the world’s top researchers reflects the University’s firm commitment to its ASPIRE Agenda, championed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dimie Ogoina, a professor of internal medicine and an infectious disease expert himself, and one of the listed scientists. TOPSCINET (formerly the “Top2% Scientists” database) evaluates researchers across 22 disciplines and 174 subfields using data from the Scopus/Elsevier biometric database.

The ranking measures scholarly impact, influence, and citation metrics, offering a rigorous, data-driven benchmark of excellence. Inclusion in this list means that a researcher’s work ranks among the top 2% globally in terms of impact and relevance, an extraordinary recognition of sustained academic excellence. Adding to this wave of achievement, Bayelsa Medical University has been officially included in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings with “Reporter Status.” This recognition marks BMU’s first step into the prestigious global ranking system. The “Reporter Status” is given to universities that have submitted credible data for evaluation but are not yet ranked, often due to an insufficient number of research publications signalling readiness to compete on the world stage in the coming years.

Together, these achievements - the TOPSCINET global ranking and the inclusion in the Times Higher Education WUR - place Bayelsa Medical University firmly on the global map of emerging institutions of excellence. They represent not just personal triumphs for the scholars involved, but also institutional validation for BMU, the Bayelsa State Government, and Nigeria. BMU remains resolute in its mission to nurture world-class researchers, foster global partnerships, and expand its contribution to medical innovation and societal development. We applaud the recipients and the university’s leadership for the double celebration and its determination to be counted among the world’s leading medical universities!.
